Hey all,

I'm new to the board but I must say I've been enjoying browsing through it. I've been an Iron & Wine fanatic ever since I saw him live at the Orpheum Theatre in 2007 (it was blazingly hot and humid and plagued with technical difficulties, but Sam Beam's magic made that not matter). There are a few things that I've been searching for that I was hoping you guys could help me find. The first is a decent recording of an acoustic only version of History of Lovers, played similarly to the Orpheum concert. I'm not really a fan of the Calexico version, but I really like the power of the song when he plays it by himself. Playedlastnight has the Orpheum concert, but unfortunately from what I could tell from the samples, the last few songs, including History of Lovers and the other slower songs I love, are really quiet, probably due to some sort of technical malfunction. I would also really appreciate it if I could get a tab for the acoustic fingerstyle version of Resurrection Fern that's on the Fall 2007 recordings download from the Iron & Wine site. That version of that song is absolutely my favorite Iron & Wine song of all time, but he plays it so rarely like that, and I can only find the tabs for the regular strummed version of the song. Thanks for the help guys!

Best,
Kevin

Can't help you out with History of Lovers, but I think I've got Resurrection Fern down.

Sam uses the same chords as the album version and picks them with his usual style; see Brett's guide for a better introduction here:
http://www.passingafternoon.com/forum/index.php/topic,73.0.html

I went ahead and tabbed out the song anyway, and tried to capture most of the variations Sam uses in this version.  My timing is probably off in the tab, so just try and match the song more than the tab; the notes, however, should be correct.

Standard Tuning
Capo 4
Code:
Verse:

   C
e|------0----------------0---------------0---------------0---------
B|-1---------------0h1-------------0h1-------------0h1-------------
G|----------0----------------0---------------0---------------0-----
D|----2--------2-------2-------2-------2-------2-------2-------2---
A|-3------3--------3-------3-------3-------3-------3-------3-------
E|-----------------------------------------------------------------

…..days..  .…we will live…       …like our…

   Em
e|--------0---------------0--------------0-------------
B|-0-------------------------------0-------------------
G|---0----------------0--------------0---------------0-
D|----2---------0h2-----2------0h2----2--------0h2-----
A|-2--------0h2------------0h2-----2-------0h2---------
E|------------------0------------------------------0----

ghosts…

   F                                C
e|---------------------------------------0----------------0--------
B|------1---------------1-----------1---------------0h1------------
G|-------------2-----------------------------0----------------0----
D|-3--------3-------3-------3----------2--------2-------2--------2-
A|----3-------3-------3-------3-----3------3--------3-------3------
E|-1------1-------1-------1----------------------------------------

…..glass….

   G
e|------3-------3---------------3----------------3-----------------
B|-0--------------------0---------------0--------------------------
G|------------------0---------------0----------------0---0---0-----
D|----0-------0-------0-------0-------0--------0----------------0--
A|--------0h2-------------0h2--------------0h2---------0---2-------
E|-3--------------3---------------3----------------3---------------
…..clothes…

The chorus is the same general picking style for each of the chords; the progression is the only difference.

           F                                                   C
We'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
                    F                                                     G
Both our tender bellies wound in bailing wire

Then repeat for the next two lines.

There are some other variations that I didn't tab; he doesn't always do the G-walkdown at the end of the verse/chorus, and he adds the 3rd fret on the 2nd string to the C after the first chorus, but generally he uses the same pattern.

Hopefully this is accurate, and helps.  Feel free to revise/correct.

Thanks adaronkentano and Brett! Yeah I wasn't sure which section to put it in, as I wanted the recording, which didn't really fit in Tabs & Lyrics. I probably should've made two separate threads for it.

Whoops - Just noticed a quick mistake on the tabs, when he's playing the C chord I think he should be hammering on the B string, not the A. Also, I don't think it's an F chord at the word "glass," as the notes don't sound the same. Otherwise it seems good!

Totally correct on the C hammer-on - I fixed that in the tab.

The F part is a bit confusing, as I assume he's playing some sort of F-chord, just probably not the full barre chord.  You're right, it doesn't sound like I tabbed it, but I'm not sure exactly what he is doing.

Anyway, thanks for the corrections!  And all the best!

For the "F" chord I'm sure he is doing 13300x. Just don't play the high E string and work the finger pattern around this. I don't know exactly what this chord is, but it's vintage Sam.
